What is the SCA?
The Society for Creative Anachronisms is an international, educational organization that specializes in medieval recreation. To find out more about it please visit the SCA webpage.

How did I get involved?
A friend of mine was involved in the society a few years ago. He told me that they had "fighter" practice every Tuesday in Union Square Park, NYC, NY. I went to check it out in April, 1995. It was fun to watch. There were people wearing armor and carrying shields and rattan swords. Crack, bang, ouch a nasty leg shot. Crunch, a shot blocked by a shield. It was awesome. I was hooked.

What do I do in the SCA?
There are a lot more things to do in this society other than fighting. I am involved in several of the more gentle arts. The first thing I got into was making mead. Mead is a honey wine that is one of the oldest alcoholic beverages known to mankind. I got into costuming/garb making so I would have something to wear at events. I enjoy cooking, so it seemed natural to get into medieval cooking. I've helped in the kitchen at several events and I ran my first feast (feastocrat) in June, 1997.

What's all this about a Japanese persona?
My persona is named Nagashima Ichiro Ujimichi. He is from late 14th century Japan. At this point, I haven't developed an entire history for him. He holds no titles.

How does someone get involved?
To get involved, simply go to local meetings, practices, workshops and events. The SCA has a geography page to help newcomers figure out which of the eighteen kingdoms they live in. Once you've reached the correct kingdom page, there should be links to events, and local groups.

The local group pages should have meetings, practices, workshops and events listed, as well as listings for contact people within the local group. Please do not be shy when it comes to introducing yourself to these people. I have found that most SCAdian (members of the SCA) are quite welcoming. There are also a number of SCA (e-mail) lists out there to join.

To give an idea of how the groups are broken down, I will describe where I live within the boundaries of the SCA. I reside in Lions End, which is within The Crown Province of stgarr, which is within The East Kingdom.
